Immigration Attorney in Miami
Helping Miami families pursue U.S. citizenship and reunite with loved ones — with clear, personal guidance through every step of the process. Hablamos Español.
Immigration matters are personal. Whether you’re ready to become a U.S. citizen or working to bring a family member to the United States, the paperwork is detailed, the timelines are long, and small mistakes can cause costly delays. Our firm helps individuals and families in Miami move through the process with clarity and confidence.
We focus on the immigration matters our clients need most — U.S. citizenship and naturalization and family-based petitions, including cases where your relative is outside the country and will complete the process abroad. From the first form to the final interview, we help you understand what to expect and keep your case moving.
We concentrate on two areas where experienced guidance makes the biggest difference:
Citizenship & Naturalization
Already a lawful permanent resident? We help green card holders apply for U.S. citizenship through naturalization — preparing the N-400 application, getting ready for the civics and English test, and guiding you through the interview.
Learn about citizenship →Family-Based Petitions
Petition for a spouse, child, parent, or sibling to immigrate — including relatives who are outside the United States and will complete the process through a U.S. embassy or consulate (consular processing).
Learn about family petitions →For many families, immigration is about being together and feeling secure. U.S. citizenship brings the right to vote, a U.S. passport, protection from deportation, and the ability to petition for more family members. A family petition can open the door for a spouse, child, parent, or sibling to build their life here. We’re here to help you take that step.
America Alvarez leads the immigration practice at Alexis Garcia Legal, bringing more than three decades of legal experience to the families she serves. Admitted to practice in 1987, she has built her career around the kind of personal, high-stakes legal matters that shape people’s lives — and she handles each one with a steady focus on making a complicated process feel clear and manageable.
A two-time University of Miami graduate, Ms. Alvarez earned both her undergraduate degree and her law degree there. Her work centers on immigration and bankruptcy — helping individuals and families pursue lawful permanent residency and U.S. citizenship, and standing with homeowners and others working through financial hardship. Her aim is always the same: practical, well-informed guidance delivered with genuine compassion.
Her experience is unusually wide-ranging. She began as an attorney-advisor with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Administrative Law Judges, helping draft legal opinions and working on labor and Black Lung cases brought by coal miners. She then spent close to twenty years with the U.S. division of an international publishing company, handling contract drafting, licensing, and cross-jurisdictional copyright matters, supporting litigation, and staying involved in the daily running of the business. Later, at a firm focused on discrimination law, she took on housing and disability-rights cases, including matters against school boards, hospitals, and large housing organizations.
That breadth gives Ms. Alvarez a perspective few attorneys can offer. Whether she’s preparing a naturalization application or a family petition, she combines decades of hands-on experience with a commitment to staying current on both the law and the technology that drives it — so her clients receive guidance that is seasoned and up to date.
Immigration cases can stretch on for months or years, so the right guidance matters. Our firm offers personal attention, clear communication in both English and Spanish, and steady support from your first consultation through the final decision. We take the time to explain your options honestly, prepare your case carefully, and keep you informed at every stage — so you’re never left wondering where things stand.
Do I really need an attorney for a citizenship or family petition?
You’re allowed to file on your own, but immigration applications are detailed and unforgiving — small errors or missing documents can cause long delays or denials. An attorney helps you file correctly the first time, prepare for the interview, and keep your case on track.
Can you help if my family member is outside the United States?
Yes. We regularly handle family petitions where the beneficiary lives abroad and will complete the process through consular processing at a U.S. embassy or consulate in their home country.
How long does the immigration process take?
Timelines vary widely depending on the type of petition, the family relationship, and current government processing times. During your consultation we’ll give you a realistic picture of what to expect for your specific situation.
Do you offer consultations in Spanish?
Yes — hablamos español. Consultations and case communication are available in both English and Spanish, so you can discuss your case comfortably in the language you prefer.
